CARIA. Antiochia ad Maeandrum. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Tetrassarion (Bronze, 27 mm, 14.40 g, 1 h), mid to late 2nd century AD. ΖЄΥϹ ΒΟΥΛΑΙΟϹ Diademed head of Zeus Boulaios to left. Rev. ANTIOXЄΩN Zeus Boulaios standing front, head to left, holding thunderbolt in his right hand and with a long scepter leaning against his left arm. Martin, Antiocheia 3.2 corr. = RPC IV.2 online 9464 corr. = SNG München 60 corr. (Zeus holding thunderbolt not eagle). Extremely rare and likely the finest known example. A lovely example of this interesting issue with a beautiful depiction of Zeus Boulaios. Good very fine.

Zeus Boulaios was the patron god of the boulé, the council of the city. Pausanias records that in the Bouleuterion of Athens, there '... are a wooden figure of Zeus Boulaios, as well as an Apollon, the work of Peisias, and a Demos by Lyson' (Paus. 1.3.5)
